Child Protection and Support
The tragic case of poor Sara Sharif needs to command the attention of everyone in Surrey. Many of us are parents, some will be teachers or social workers, and some even county councillors. We all need to be concerned, not least in finding answers to the following questions:-
1. Why, in the light of what later transpired, was Urfan Sharif given custody of Sara after his marriage to her mother failed?
2. Why, and after what enquiries, was permission given for Sara to be 'home schooled' when she had been seen with bruises on her? What in fact did the home schooling actually consist of?
3.Given that Urfan Sharif seemed to think he had some sort of legal justification for his 'punishment' of Sara will Parliament now ban 'smacking' (as in Scotland) so that no one in the future can use this kind of excuse again?
4. Why did Surrey Social Services close the file on Sara so quickly after the home schooling decision?
5. Did Surrey Police, as has been suggested, delay contacting Interpol after the family had decamped to Pakistan?
6. Given the gravity of the issues arising from this case and given too the poor record of the authorities in Surrey can we be assured that the enquiry now to take place will be a) Judge led, b) Public, c) Committed to reporting as soon as possible (Not taking a year as seems to be envisaged.)
7. When will home schooling be properly regulated?
No more Baby Ps! No more Saras!
