Moving to Dartmouth tips

We live in the picturesque small town of Knaresborough (pop. 15,000) 4 miles from the larger town of Harrogate (pop. 75,000). We would like to retire to the South Devon coast (with views of the sea), even though we have never been, and are looking for a similar sized place to where we live now with a nearby town for all the facilities and amenities we need. We have no family or commitments and would like to cycle, run and generally enjoy the outdoors. We think that Dartmouth might suit the lifestyle we would like to lead and wonder what it is like to live there and what positives and negatives we should be aware of. Any help at all would be really appreciated thank you.
