The history of Mains of Linton
My surname is Linton, not a common name, and I wondered what the historical connection of the name Linton in Aberdeenshire was, since the name comes from the Scottish Borders---Linton, East n West Linton, Linton hill, the Linn burn etc.
One theory is that during the mid 1300s, there was an outbreak of fever in Aberdeen and there was an exodus of wealthy Aberdonians to the country. One of them may have been Provost of Aberdeen, Sir Nigel Linton in c1340.
I know that there was such an exodus from Aberdeen in the 14th century to Kingswells and Skene----Does any one of your members know ???
I live in Aberdeenshire, but came here from Fife in1973. My ancestors came from Linton (near Kelso) to Fife 220 years ago
