I was at an Old Library Wood event at the weekend. Sergeant Mark Shepherd attended. During the conversation we discovered it costs £120,000 PER WEEK to police Prince of Wales Road; 30 officers on a weekend - per night - drafted from around the county.

Imagine what else they could do effectively if these resources weren't needed at that scale. Clubs, bars and other venues really should be making a contribution to these costs. I'm sure I read NCFC have to pay towards policing matches.

Really makes it clear that we, the public, need to voice our concerns over future consultations regards new clubs etc on the road.

Sorry but i cannot believe those figures.  Over £6m to police one road over a year? Each of the 30 officers is on £2000 a night if that is the case (a bit simplistic in calculation i admit).  Before facts are banded about 'in conversation' i think perhaps under the freedom of information act the actual figures should be sought. (not having a pop at you MF or the sergeant).  Agree with the contribution aspect from clubs/bars of course.

I guess the figures include transporting those officers into Norwich too. Must be other costs that aren't obvious.

including 'out of thin air' costs....lol

for example, the cost of policing norwich city football club for season 13-14 (brief google search) showed that the total cost for the entire season was £300,000 which is 80+ police officers plus 6 mounted police units on an average match. This was for the 'extra' required, not for normal police officers who were on duty normally and used for these matches.  So some of the officers on Prince of Wales rd were presumably also on normal police duty.

so even allowing for inflation i cant see how over £6m is spent on one rd throughout the year.

(bet you wished you hadnt posted now..lol. - but at least it livened up a stale board)

Not at all Wayne as it's prompted discussion.  I try to put topics that do that. Not easy these days.

Thanks for the information you found. Obviously I didn't do the maths you did and just gasped at the figure l was told.

Regards NCFC matches, I guess that's around £10,000 per game, allowing for friendlies and cup games as well as the league, although there's rarely many of the latter.

What ever the cost I agree with you that the venues who benefit from this police presence should have to contribute towards it.

Yes I quite agree with you all there, the premises in question on Prince of Wales Road should contribute towards the cost of Policing that area at night. Why should we have to pay this cost. But then will that not increase the cost of going into these venues?? They would then want to recoup the money I would think.

But then if you look on the bright side, if these venues put up their charges maybe there will be less trouble down there, as perhaps they would not be able afford to pay to go in!!

One always lives in hope!!
