early 20th century occupants of Littlecote House?
I am writing a book based around family history here in Britain, but whose 2nd half focuses on early 20th century emigration to the USA, where my grandfather, George Joseph Coker (b. 1888, White Horses, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland) , emigrated in 1912. In the 1911 census, he is listed as a servant working at Littlecote House, but he appears from the census to be one of 3 servants living in Littlecote Lodge, whose head of household is listed as George Woodcock (the gamekeeper at the time) and his family.
I had understood from family recollections, that my grandfather had travelled to the USA whilst still 'in service'. So I am trying to determine who was the head of the household at Littlecote House in 1910-11, and might they have travelled to the USA prior to WW1, and taken some of the domestic servants with them?. Was it a member of the Leyborne Popham family who were living at Littlecote House at the time, as I understand it was they who owned the house until 1929?
I have not found any emigration records for the family at that time, but the occupants may have been part of the extended Leyborne Popham family, or otherwise. If anyone can shine any light on this subject, I would be very grateful.
With best wishes, Fred Coker (Manchester, England)
