Tried to post a message on Streetlife today telling people I'm off to mylocalforum.co.uk but of course I've been blocked! It seems they've been blocking/censoring posters/posts for a few days now but only just realised what was happening after reading a thread on Moneysavingexpert: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=5598905&page=4#topofpage see post number 66. I'm hoping this site might be able to engender a similar community vibe to the original Streetlife that is certainly not being offered by Nextdoor.

Anyone there?

Hi, one thing on this site that is different, you are not confined to one area, you can search over different locations.

For example my area, is Cardiff, but I have an interest in Herts - because my Partner comes from Borehamwood. Also, I also post on MSE - on the streetlife/nextdoor thread.

I am on nextdoor, but it's not as good as streetlife, also on kahuti, but the people in my 25 mile radius are mainly across the channel in Weston-super-Mare!!

Hopefully these alternative local social media sites will expand.

Hi Geoffrey, yes, I'm hoping more people will join but I guess people just aren't aware of mylocalforum. I really miss Streetlife. Do you think Nextdoor will be sustainable in the long run. Haven't heard much positive about it...

Unfortunately frankie, it seems no-one is using this site, at least the WGC bit of it. People seem to use one of the various WGC Facebook sites now to stay in touch with what's going on locally. I'm afraid I'm not a Facebooker (although not a member of Facebook I do read it to see what's being discussed but obviously I can't participate in it)...

Sparrow: - agreed this forum isn't not getting known - I'd forgotten about it until I had a couple of email reminders in the last couple of days. And nextdoor - is doing OK AFAIK. It's a very localised forum, useful, for recommendations, ASB/crime, and lost pets. Have joined facebook as well, which is ok, best is you join several 'groups' e.g. geographic area  or special interest.

Hello Geoffrey,

It's a shame that when Nextdoor took over Streetlife it didn't follow the same format and anonymity that had worked so well. And since Facebook isn't designed to be a forum but threads of discussion that appear in a continuous stream I prefer the organised structure of a forum where discussion can be sorted into topics, be it to buy/sell/give away, recommendations, what's on, local politics, etc. Facebook seems to attract more than its fair share of unhelpful unedifying vitriol, although I'm sure it's a case of its membership comprising the silent majority. So, I do browse it for news but would like something I feel I could interact with more usefully. And you can't really rely on the local paper to let you know everything that's going on locally, it's so thin these days. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't get most of their leads from the local Facebook pages.
