I am researching my family tree and finding it very difficult because my great great grandfather’s name was William Evans and the census information mainly just says Wales or North Wales. The only clues I have are the 1871 and 1901 census where there are place names I can’t decipher but I’m wondering if they are what the census taker might have heard if someone said Cefn? He was an Iron Roller and worked in furnaces wherever he moved to around England when he left Wales, so as Cefn Mawr had an iron works it could be where he started. I’d appreciate any thoughts you may have on what the census says. Thanks.

I'm trying to trace my great great grandmother Elizabeth Brown. According to her marriage certificate and census records she was born in Cefn Mawr her father was John Brown, who was a collier. She would have been born about 1830. It's possible Elizabeth had a brother called Jonathon and one called Phillip and a sister called Sarah. I've no idea whether her father was also born in Wales. Elizabeth had an illegitimate son (Benjamin) in Wrexham workhouse about 1857. She married Samuel Nash in Staffordshire 1859 and went on to have several more children, Benjamin stayed with Elizabeth and was raised with her other children.

Hello. I'm looking for information about my great grandfather David Charles 1885-1939. Father: Thomas Charles (agricultural labourer). Mother: Elizabeth Charles nee Jones. Married Sarah Hughes at Zion Chapel 2/08/1881. Known addresses - Afonisha, Ruabon (on Birth Cert). 48 Well Street (Marriage Cert), 43 Well St (daughter's Birth Cert) and Cartref  Well St (on Death Cert).  Marriage Cert describes him as Grocer but his Death Cert says Colliery Haulage man. He and Sarah had  7 children. I would be very grateful if anyone can give me any information about him, or suggest anywhere else I might look.  Thanks very much.  Diana Marriott. .

Searching for information about Grandmother - 0 replies

I'm researching my family tree.  My father was born in Cefn Mawr and lived in Arch Cottage, with his twin brother, sister and mother, Elizabeth Ann Evans.  My father's Dad I believe died young, his name was John Thomas Evans.  Can remember holidays in Arch Cottage and have photos of my Nan and the cottage.  I was told that my grandmother was born in Manchester but was brought Cefn to live in Plas Kynaston House with her 'cousins' after her mother died, and remained there until her marriage to John.  Does anyone know the name of the family that lived there in the late 1800's and early 1900's?  I believe her maiden name was Williams, and I would like to find out the name of her parents to continue my search.   Hope someone may have some information.  Thanks for reading this far.
