My grandmother Margaret Jane McIntosh lived in Sandsend for many years. Her daughters Gladys, Jane, Grace,  and Eva Mary were all married at Lythe in the 1930s. It is believed she was a land lady of an hotel.  Even on her death in 1953 in Cumbria her address is given as Smardale. Was Smardale ever a Public House and am I correct in thinking she was the land lady.  My father James McIntosh  also possibly lived there as I have a photograph of him with colleagues  and on the reverse is written E Kingston,Morley’s Yard, Church Street, Whitby, Can anyone help, many thanks.
