Is Backwell becoming a town?
I can remember first coming to live in Backwell in 1980 and after living in London, I was delighted with the village atmosphere of the place. There were two butchers, there were two banks a lovely shop selling ladies fashions, wool, haberdashery and loads more. The green grocers and delicatessen and two bread shops were always busy and all ones needs were met at the local shops. All this local shopping meant that people were constantly seeing familiar faces and I soon found I had a circle of friends. For me it was the perfect village.
Today, less shops, less community but more new houses and yet more to come, struggling women’s social groups and church congregations, more traffic and more lonely people.
