'Two Hatting' - 0 replies

andrewmcluskey47 Posted by andrewmcluskey47 in General Ashford discussion on Wed Mar 19, 2025 11:25am

Jo Sexton is a well regarded local councillor in Ashford.  However, can I suggest, with all respect, that she give a lead to other councillors with regard to an issue which impinges on the concerning situation which has arisen at Spelthorne Council (of which Jo happens to be the Leader.)?

Given the huge debts incurred by the Borough and the highly critical 'Ofsted'  report from the Government it seems reasonably to suggest the following.  This is that Jo and other elected representatives on Spelthorne Council who also sit on Surrey County Council give up their 'Two Hat' status to concentrate on what for them - and indeed all local councillors, must be their primary concern, i.e. restoring Spelthorne Council to a debt free and properly run condition.

In the past it may have been acceptable for people to have more than one political job.  But not, I would suggest, now!

Fine town though it is Ashford does not live in a vacuum.  For good or ill we are part of the Borough of Spelthorne, and the Authority, as many will now know, has failed its 'Ofsted' (i.e. Government Inspection.)  This , along with the Council's critical financial situation, will have implications for us all.

As a former councillor I experienced at first hand quite a bit of the poor personal relationships which, for quite a time , have characterised work at Knowle Green.  Until this aspect of the problem is sorted I really doubt if things will improve.  After all,  we know that, for example, in a marriage a couple can weather most difficulties if  they face them together.

We have been hearing a lot about local government reorganisation as well as Spelthorne's woes.  To be frank it doesn't really matter how 'pretty' any reorganisation is if there isn't a shared desire among the politicians and their officers to work for harmony and progress.

Hi, My name is Eric, & in , [I believe] 1978 , I was working at the above address , travelling around the area glazing. I was wondering if anybody had any memories of that time.  Names I can remember,   Geoff Benham , Richard  ? , both apprentices .Geoff Oram , Simon Randall , Andy Hastain [his dad had his own glazing business.    I drove up to Crawley the other day , for the first time in nearly fifty years [cant believe it] .....we all worked on the BROADFIELDS & BEWBUSH developments, during a national  bread strike.  Sainsburys had just opened a store with an internal bakery,so we bought bread [french sticks], to take home to Portsmouth

Creative Writing Group - 0 replies

Peterwriter66 Posted by Peterwriter66 in Things to do and what's on in Herne Bay on Mon Mar 17, 2025 10:17am

I run a creative writing group which meets fortnightly on Saturdays 10am-midday at a central venue.

The group is for everyone who wants to talk and learn about writing and discuss aspects of creative writing. It doesn't matter if you are a complete novice or published writer - you will be welcome and the group will be able to offer you something.

We are an unusual creative writing group in that we do not write during meetings. We talk, share ideas, experience and thoughts. We share writing via email and set regular writing tasks.

There are no fees but we share the cost of room hire equally between us.

If you want to know more or join my group please email me at:
