It is an excellent, friendly community, with a wide range of people, both indigenous and incomers. Attractive town and shops (everything you need), restaurants, cafes, pubs, on a steepish hillside on the east side of the River Derwent. Several good supermarkets. Attractive Belper Park and Belper Memorial Gardens by river. Outstanding cinema. Excellent walking, particularly on the Chevin (hill opposite town) and towards Holbrook and Milford. Fortnightly market in the attractively situated Market Place (with the large free Coppice car park adjacent). The oldest part of Belper, perched on a terrace even higher up the hill from the Market Place, is around St. John's Chapel, which dates from 1250.
