Whereabouts of Horsham Court & Nellis' Farm
Hi,
My mum (unfortunately now gone) was evacuated in about 1943 from West London to the Horsham area along with two of her sisters and their mum.
In her memoirs she mentions they were -".. taken by train to Worcester where we went to a Holding-Centre for the night. The next day we went out in a car to find someone to take us in. After a while we went to Martley to a big house called Horsham Court. Mr Walker who owned the court was out at the time so we went in..
We started school and had to walk about 3 miles through fields and alongside the River Teme through Nellis' Farm where their geese used to chase us... .. it was a really memorable 9 months"
I know over the years she often spoke about that being the best time of her life, she loved feeding the lambs, etc; she would have been 8 or 9 at the time.
So... long post, but I wondered where these places were ? Ive been looking on current and old maps but I can't for sure quite figure out locations.
I'm tempted to believe Nellis' Farm could have been Hilltop?
Any idea where the school may be/have been?
And of course where Mr Walker lived
I know she went back some years before she died and the places were desolate and it broke her heart to see it like that.
I live in Dorset and if I can figure out these locations I would love to visit the area.
Maybe there's some sort of census/residence info from those years that someone could point me towards?
Thanks for reading anyway,
Kev Callahan (for my mother Dorothy ne Simpson)
