Research our family history regarding Lady Hall

My name is Laurence Murray (Larry) I reside in the U.S. and have time on my hands. So, family history has passed down a story of our ancestors owning all or a part of Lady Hall. This would be prior to the Boer war, not sure if it was the first or second Boer war. This is important as the story goes that our ancestor was killed in the Boer War but there was no record of his death. He was proported to be the Lord of the Manor. Because there was no record of his death the property went to the Crown???? He was supposed to be a high ranking officer.
It seems like a fun thing to work on in retirement, any light you can shed on this will be helpful.
