I hope that someone reading this will be able to help me trace any surviving relatives from my mother's family (Sutton), which had strong roots in Urchfont going back to at least the 18th century.

My mother Rita, née Sutton, was born in Urchfont in 1918. Her parents were Frank Arthur James Sutton (1880-1961) and Sarah Ann Mathias (1884-1967). Her father was the innkeeper at the Nag’s Head in Urchfont at the time of her birth. Although my parents moved away from Wiltshire after the war, my mother remained very attached to Urchfont, and her ashes are interred in the churchyard at St Michael & All Angels, together with those of my father (John Parish), who died at the end of 2019.

I knew my mother’s younger brother, John (also known as Jack as a young man) quite well. He passed away in 1997 and didn't have any children. Sadly, however, for reasons I have never known, my mother was estranged from her elder brother, Frank. From my research online, I have found out that he was born in 1916 and was married to Freda, née New (1915-2009). I understand that they had two sons, William and Robin, born in 1940 and 1942 respectively. Frank died in 1983 and is buried in the cemetery at Urchfont; I visited his grave last summer and his gravestone refers to him as a father and grandfather. I have been unable, however, to trace his children, although I believe that Robin died in 1999.

I have no other family left in the UK (I myself live in France) and would love to make contact with any surviving relatives from my mother's family. Perhaps someone reading this will be friends or (former) neighbours of one of these Suttons and will be able to put me in touch with them or let them know that I would like to get to know them.

Thank you so much!

Julian Parish.
