NEW TO THIS FORUM. HAVE VISITED BERWICK UPON TWEED - 0 replies
Hello. My name is Ian and I an new to this Forum. Although I dont live in Berwick upon Tweed I have visited the town more than once and I have a heart for the friendly North Northumbrian people living there and across the rural hinterland that does extend over the Border into Scotland.
I currently live in the North Pennines, but I went to school in Hexham where I studied for my A-levels many years ago. I have visited a number of places locally starting in 1988 when I visited the Alnmouth aluminium refinery (as then existed) as part of my Chemistry A level studies. I have stayed just over the Scottish Border at a lovely Bed and Breakfast in Kirk Yetholm and climbed to the summit of The Cheviot more than once. I have been to Bamburgh Castle and nearby Seahouses with my family and in 2006 I came through Berwick-upon-Tweed with my father en- route to Dunbar and observed some of the coastal scenery that stretches from north of Newcastle all the way up the Coast into Scotland. I also have a friend who has moved to nearby Wooler.
I thus have a heart for Berwick-upon-Tweed and North Northumbrian folk, often overlooked by the North East Regional Television news that usually does not get North of Tyne (well over an hour to the south). Links across the Scottish Border and with Edinburgh are more important than those with Newcastle or Sunderland- yet precisely these strong ties between Berwick-upon-Tweed/ North Northumberland and Scottish Borders' communities will be threatened by the spectre of Scotland breaking away from the UK and becoming independent.
I would like to help and advise in practical ways for folk to retain and maintain your cross-Border links. I also have an interest in the matter of northern Northumberland not having a geographically-appropriate Regional Television service and I think its a shame that ITV Border (Scotland)-which still provides coverage of Berwick and the Scottish Borders- is no longer your default ITV Region because you dont get coverage anywhere like far North enough from ITV Tyne Tees or BBC Look North for news to be local or relevant.
