Tate family 1700s - 0 replies

Hi there, A recently found document has enabled me to research my maternal grandfather's line at last, a bit tricky  to do from New Zealand. It  seems my great grandfather John Tate in South Shields is likely the descendant of a series of Joseph Tates who appear to be:

 Joseph1 b. 1801, christened Felton, m. Mary Bruce

his parents Joseph2 (b. 1774 chr. Felton, from West Thirston/Acklington), and Ann (Mattinson of Longhorsley m 1796); and Joseph2's parents

Joseph3 and Mary Donkin.

Joseph3, a tailor, married Mary in 1761 and they lived in West Thirston. Their children appear to be Jane b 1762, Richard b 1764, Alice b 1769, Ralph,b 1774 and Margaret b 1777, and two sons called Joseph. The first died and the other seems to have survived, become a labourer and can be found with Ann in South Shields in the 1841 census, in the household of Joseph1 and his family.

I wonder if anybody there might be able to

a) corroborate that  the Joseph Tates of West Thirston in the 1700s had descendants in South Shields (mostly St Hilda's parish)

and if so,

b) indicate who Joseph3's father may have been,  and who his family was (he may have been Joseph b 1732, chr. Morpeth,  son of George and Ursula Grey,  or Joseph b 1740 chr. Norham, son of Andrew and Katharine Grieve?

c) provide any other info or history about this family and where/how they lived. I'm very curious and a trip there to research it isn't a simple thing! My mother (the daughter of Georgina Tate b South Shields 1915) is now 78 and I would love to be able to document her history for her while she is still alive.

Thank you much for any help you can provide.
