Roman River Music rounds off its September festival with an intriguing concert in Chappel Station on Sunday 15 September at 3pm (note the time). A world-class quartet of string players, including Roman River’s artistic director Orlando Jopling, will play Beethoven’s ‘Serioso’ quartet and Steve Reich’s mesmerising ‘Different Trains’ based on experiences of train journeys before, during and after World War 2. This makes use of pre-recorded words and sounds. Chappel Station provides a perfect setting for this unique work.

Virtuoso clarinettist and composer Mark Simpson and the Elias Quartet will play clarinet quintets by Brahms and Herbert Howells – both rich and mellow works. The Elias Quartet will play one of Beethoven’s early, energetic quartets. A splendid mix for an early autumn evening.

Virtuoso violinist Thomas Gould and pianist Ivana Gavric will play a fascinating mixture of the familiar and unfamiliar: memorable sonatas by Debussy and Prokofiev sandwich works by Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür and Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski.

Virtuoso clarinetist and composer Mark Simpson, cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Rick Uttley will play trios by Beethoven and Brahms. Beethoven - youthful, perky, tuneful; Brahms – mellow, autumnal, his farewell. They’ll also perform two of Mark’s own works – Night Music and Echoes & Embers.

Roman River’s festival brings four world-class concerts to St Mary’s in September, under the leadership of its artistic director Orlando Jopling.

Thursday 5 September, 8pm. The Festival Orchestra conducted by Orlando with guest violinist Jonian Ilias-Kadesha play Beethoven’s glorious violin concerto and his iconic 5th symphony.

Friday 6 September, 8pm. A Night at the Opera! Four stunning young singers, introduced by Orlando, perform memorable operatic melodies, duets and ensembles by Mozart, Verdi and Puccini and others. They are accompanied by English National Opera’s star pianist Andrew Smith.

Saturday 7 September, 8pm. The Festival Orchestra conducted by Orlando play a varied programme of memorable works by Wagner, Debussy and Stravinsky, culminating in Sibelius vast, exhilarating 5th symphony.

Sunday 8 September, 3pm – note the time. A Family Concert. The Festival Orchestra and Orlando are joined by children’s author and story teller James Campbell for a family-friendly concert of some of the best-loved works with built-in melody, story and excitement. From the Sorcerer’s Apprentice to West Side Story – an afternoon for the young and the young at heart.
