I am pleased to see that as of tomorrow the fine for using a mobile phone while driving will be £200. Why oh why don't people just turn them off when they get in the car?  If people did this as a matter of habit- like putting on your seat belt, there would be far less accidents. Driving is a dangerous occupation and needs 100% of our concertration.

And a £200 fine is barely sufficient in this day and age - simply allows people to continue thus. Max points and loss of licence for a minimum of 6months would serve better. Actually, only losing a licence for determinate period will stop people from a potentially fatal scenario.

I'm happy to say that while driving home from Bognor this morning I saw no mobile phone users where previously we would see at least three. There were two not wearing seat belts though!

The problem is that it isn't socially unacceptable like drink driving is. Having said that remember 30 years ago when CB radio was all the rage? The police kept saying we'll nick you if we see you using a hand held mic' but then had to admit they used hand held mic's all the time. Social media is 90% of mobile users life and they must stay in contact otherwise they'll die from neglect. The way to stop mobile use while driving is for every car and van and truck to be fitted with a bluetooth connection just as they said any car that carries kids must have a child seat fitted. And all cars etc must have safety belts fitted too like all motorcyclists must wear crash helmets.
